Spruce Pines NC

Nestled in the mountains is one of the jewels of North Carolina trout fishing, the North Toe River, and one of the shiniest baubles as the section that flows through the town of Spruce Pine. Access is outstanding; you can park on a paved lot, and there are lots of trout.

A section of slightly more than two miles, from the US 19E Bridge east of town to the NC 226 Bridge north of town is managed by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission as delayed-harvest waters (DH), and is classified as the Spruce Pine Mountain Heritage Trout Water.

The river is heavily stocked — with plenty of big trout which makes for some of the best fishing in the state!

Suggested length of 8’ to 10’ works well with 3 to 6 wt line.  Leader to match rod length in 3X to 5X.  Shorter leaders make casting weighted flies a little easier.  If desired, you can always add more tippet to lengthen leader.

Suggestions-fish will generally be in deep slow water. So use lots of weight to get fly down.  Size is not cast in concrete, so experiment with fly size and pattern.
