The Blue Ridge chapter in Winston Salem, NC needs your financial support to control sediment flow, provide bank stability and canopy to cool the waters of the Mitchell River.  This will allow the wild trout population upstream to migrate down to the rest of the stream and thrive.

Here is a short video for your review about the project:

Our chapter has been fundraising for several years to stop the erosion and sediment flow into the river. In 2019 we started by putting our first set of stairs on the banks of the river to channel fishing traffic off the banks to reduce erosion. This year we have put in three more staircases which is estimated to reduce sediment flow by about 28 tons. We have worked with the landowners to change the top warm water outflow from the Devotion lake up stream to a bottom cold-water outflow, to reduce water temperature in the Mitchell. We have installed data loggers in the headwaters of Mitchell as well as the Delayed harvest section to conduct temperature studies over the next few years. We have spent close to $15,000 on all these projects.  NCTU council supported the restoration with matching half that amount.

Our next phase will be replanting the banks with willow shoots to stop the erosion and plant trees where needed to provide a canopy. We plan on also putting monofilament waste stations and parking sign. We have received a $4300 grant from Embrace a stream Fund for that work but we still need at least another $5000 to cover the cost of materials and trees.

Because of this important work for this amazing stream that has so much potential for both trout fishing, and producing clear, clean, cold water that benefits us all, we have teamed up with generous supporters that are providing fantastic prizes to help us meet or even exceed our much-needed fund raising goals!

Go to Embraceastream.org select the Blue Ridge chapter and donate.

Prizes include:
1st Grand prize - A trip of a lifetime, a full day of fishing for two people with guide Marty Shaffner on the Devotion estate. The estate is located at the head of the Mitchell River. You can choose to fish their private streams or the lake with an actual replica of the Hoover Dam, fishing for steelhead, striped bass, and other big game fish.

2nd Grand Prize - A fully guided trip for two with Headwaters Outfitters in Roseman, NC. The trip includes lunch and fishing on their trophy, private streams with all gear supplied except waders.

Orvis and Trout Unlimited have also donated many other prizes like fly rods, walking sticks and other fly-fishing essentials. We will also have random drawings daily for prizes.

Donations will be accepted for any amount because every dollar matters, however, because of these generous prizes, we have decided to offer an entry into the prize drawings with every $50 dollars donated. For example, if you donate $50 dollars, your name and contact information will be entered one time in the drawing, but if you donate $100, your name and information will be entered 2 times in the drawing pool. There is no limit on how much you can donate or limit on the number of times you are entered in the drawing pool, therefore the more you give the greater the chances you have to win! We will have our drawing for the trips at our virtual chapter meeting on Nov 17th. Please remember your donations are tax deductible and go toward stream improvements that will affect many generations in the future.
